I wanted to see the movie \u201cAir\u201d when I saw the first advertisement. It was available this weekend on Amazon Prime, so Sunday evening, I watched it.<\/p>\n

If you haven\u2019t seen it, I\u00a0highly recommend<\/b>\u00a0you take the time to watch it \u2013 at least once.<\/p>\n

If you\u00a0own a business,<\/b>\u00a0are in\u00a0marketing,<\/b>\u00a0or are a basketball\u00a0fan,<\/b>\u00a0you\u2019ll take something away from it. Probably many things.<\/p>\n

Nike<\/b>\u00a0recognized the potential of Michael Jordan early on, and they invested heavily in promoting him and his shoes. They invested more than ever before when they signed\u00a0Michael Jordan<\/b>, developed this shoe just for him (as an incentive for him to sign), and made history by agreeing to give him a percentage of all sales of his shoes. This had never been done before in sports.<\/p>\n

One reason for the success of the\u00a0Air Jordan<\/b>\u00a0brand was\u00a0Nike’s marketing strategy.<\/b><\/p>\n

Nike recognized the potential of Michael Jordan early on, and they\u00a0invested heavily in promoting<\/b>\u00a0him and his shoes. They invested more than they ever had before when they signed Michael Jordan, developed this shoe just for him (as an incentive for him to sign), and\u00a0made history<\/b>\u00a0by agreeing to give him a\u00a0percentage of all sales<\/b>\u00a0of his shoes. They also created\u00a0limited-edition<\/b>\u00a0shoes and clothing lines that collectors and fans highly sought after.<\/p>\n

The most any division of shoes had ever made<\/b>\u00a0by Nike before Air Jordan\u2019s, was $3,000,000 \u2013 that was all their running shoes. In the first year, Air Jordan\u2019s was available, they sold $162,000,000 worth of shoes.<\/p>\n

According to the information at the end of the movie, Michael Jordan now makes\u00a0$400,000,000<\/b>\u00a0a year in residual income from Nike on Air Jordan products (that is the only line he gets an override on).\u00a0Nike and Michael Jordan benefited<\/b>\u00a0greatly from this mutual relationship.<\/p>\n

In the same way, we, as business owners, can most times\u00a0benefit from<\/b>\u00a0relationships with\u00a0other businesses<\/b>\u00a0to do\u00a0joint ventures<\/b>\u00a0and collaborate on things.<\/p>\n

One of the other big things that stuck out to me in this movie is what happens in a business when risk is involved. Some people consider risk a bad thing, something not to do. Others look at risk as a\u00a0calculated necessity<\/b>\u00a0that has the potential to take you where you want to be\u2026and beyond.<\/p>\n

Sometimes, your comfort level with risk changes depending on where you are in your business life. In this instance, the CEO of Nike had become a bit less willing to take risks as his company grew.<\/p>\n

As I\u2019ve often said,\u00a0comfortable<\/b>\u00a0is, or should be, the scariest place to be.<\/p>\n
