Strategies vs. Tactics

Strategy is a plan of action that is designed to get you to a particular major goal. While your strategy changes based on the outcome you want to achieve, the principles of the strategy don’t change – they are true over time, and work in the long term. (Think of your strategy like gravity – it’s a principle that works, whether we want it to or not)

Tactics, on the other hand, are the pieces you use to achieve your strategy or goal. And, they change a lot. For example, 10 years ago, before social media was so prevalent, the tactics you used to grow your business were very different than how you grow your business today.

To have an effective strategy takes planning. Most business owners aren’t great at the planning part so they end up just throwing mud on the wall and trying things. That wastes a lot of time and money and isn’t effective.

Can you imagine General Patton or Schwarzkopf just telling their troops they had no plan and they were just going to go to the battlefield and hope for the best? Or that they were just going to try this new thing to see how it works out?

Now, while your business isn’t the same as going to war, as nobody is going to die or get killed, it should be just as serious to you. After all, it is your livelihood. And, you do want to be great at it, right?

So, my question to you is…

Do you have a plan?

I’m not talking about some big formal business plan. I mean a general, overall marketing and promotional calendar or plan for 2019?

Do you have your financial goal set for 2019? If you do, have you broken it down by month? And have you planned out what promotion or sale needs to happen in order for you to make that much money each month?

Does that sound like a lot of work? Well, it’s not if you have a system for doing it.
