From Direct Response to Digital to AI…Marketing Has Changed. Human Behavior Hasn’t.

If you’ve been around marketing as long as I have, you’ve had to reinvent yourself more than once.
When I started, marketing was all about direct response. We obsessed over headlines, offers, guarantees, deadlines, and tracking every single response. Every postcard, direct mail piece, print ad, or sales letter had one job…get someone to take action.
It wasn’t about being clever. It wasn’t about getting likes. It wasn’t about going viral.
It was about getting results.
Then came the internet.
Websites became the new storefront. Email marketing exploded. Search engines changed how people found businesses. Social media arrived, followed by video, funnels, webinars, online courses, automation, and every new platform that promised to change everything.
Suddenly everyone became an “internet marketer.”
Some of the new online marketers never learned the principles that made direct response so effective. They became experts in platforms, but not necessarily in persuasion.
The tools changed.
Human psychology didn’t.
Today we’re living through another massive shift.
Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Just like the internet disrupted traditional marketing twenty-five years ago, AI is disrupting digital marketing today.
People ask me all the time, “Is AI replacing marketers?”
No.
It’s replacing marketers who only know tactics.
The marketers who thrive in this next era will be the ones who understand systems, strategy, positioning, customer psychology, and how to leverage AI to execute faster and better.
Think about it.
AI can write emails.
It can generate social posts.
It can build landing pages.
It can create images.
It can even analyze data better than most people.
But AI still needs someone to tell it what to build, why it matters, and how all the pieces fit together.
That’s where experience becomes an unfair advantage.
After more than three decades in marketing, I’ve watched every major shift. I’ve seen businesses panic because a platform changed, an algorithm shifted, or a “new secret strategy” appeared.
The businesses that survived weren’t chasing every shiny object.
They understood fundamentals.
They adapted.
They built systems instead of depending on a single tactic.
That’s exactly what’s happening with AI.
The people making the biggest impact aren’t the ones with the fanciest prompts. They’re the ones who have built repeatable systems that combine strategy, marketing knowledge, operational excellence, and AI into a scalable way of running their business.
AI is incredibly powerful.
But it’s still just a tool.
Just as a website didn’t automatically make someone a great marketer twenty years ago, having access to ChatGPT or another AI platform doesn’t automatically make someone a marketing expert today.
The winners in this next chapter will be the people who know how to think.
How to solve problems.
How to understand customers.
How to build systems that allow AI – and their teams – to perform at a higher level.
Marketing has evolved from direct response to digital to AI.
The channels have changed.
The technology has changed.
The speed has changed.
But the businesses that continue to grow still do the same things they’ve always done. They understand their customers, communicate value, make compelling offers, and consistently execute.
The future doesn’t belong to marketers who fear AI.
It belongs to marketers who combine timeless principles with today’s technology.
That’s a combination that’s very hard to beat.
