Being Everything To Everybody…

On my recent trip to the Biltmore, I spent some time walking through and browsing in downtown Asheville, NC.

As I walked past this particular restaurant, that was empty, in the middle of the day on a Saturday, I saw this sign.

While I love acceptance and diversity and inclusion, the thought when I say this was “maybe if you weren’t trying to be everything to everybody, you’d have more business”.

Yes, that’s a judgement on my part.

And I understand what the sign was trying to do.

From strictly a business perspective, one of the biggest mistakes people make is trying to be everything to everybody.

This happens because you’re afraid to miss a client or a prospect.

What actually happens when you’re clear about your target market and who you serve is more of the right people want to do business with you.

You can’t be all things to all people. It just doesn’t work. In any part of life… and especially not in business.

Think about it… even socks are specialized these days. There are running socks, hiking socks, tennis socks, and more.

Be who you are for. Shout it loudly so everyone knows and those in that category can easily find you.

And don’t wimp out and start with broadening your target until and unless you’ve given it a real chance.

By the way, if you market to women then be that. Don’t say I’m whatever it is for women… and a few cool men. That’s wimping out. Those cool men will find you if your message resonates with them – even if you’re only targeting women.

It happens all the time!
