Juneteenth: A Celebration of Freedom
June 19th, 2025 by Diane Conklin under Business - General. No Comments.
Juneteenth is celebrated each year on June 19th. It’s a holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.
The name “Juneteenth” comes from combining “June” and “nineteenth,” marking the date in 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, with the news that enslaved people were free. This announcement came more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln had issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
For generations, Juneteenth has been observed primarily in African American communities as a day of reflection, celebration, and gathering.
It honors the strength, resilience, and contributions of Black Americans and serves as a reminder of the ongoing pursuit of equality and justice.
In 2021, Juneteenth became a federal holiday, bringing greater national attention to its significance.
Today, people across the country recognize Juneteenth with parades, educational events, music, food, and conversations about history, freedom, and civil rights.
It is a day to honor the past, celebrate progress, and commit to building a more inclusive future.
Whatever you’re doing today, I hope you give the real meaning of this holiday some thought and reflection.
